Winter can be a magical season, but it also brings chilly days that can make it harder to stay motivated and keep your body moving. For dancers, it’s especially important to stay flexible, energised, and injury-free during the colder months. At Sarah Louise Ashworth School of Dance, we want to make sure you’re ready to take on the season with warmth and confidence!
Here are some simple tips and exercises to help you stay on top of your game this winter.
Warm Up Properly (It’s Even More Important in Winter!)
When it’s cold, your muscles are tighter and less flexible, which makes warming up essential to avoid injury. Spend extra time on your warm-up before diving into dance practice.
Here’s a quick routine to get started:
Jumping jacks or jogging on the spot for 2-3 minutes to raise your heart rate.
Gentle arm and leg swings to loosen up your joints.
Slow roll-downs from the top of your head to your toes, followed by a steady roll back up to stretch your spine.
Finish with dynamic stretches, like lunges with a twist or side bends, to gently wake up your muscles.
Layer Up and Stay Warm
When you’re on your way to class or practising at home, wear layers that you can easily remove once you’re warmed up. Leg warmers, wrap cardigans, and cosy socks are a dancer’s best friend in winter.
If you’re practising at home, make sure the room is warm enough before starting. Dancing in a cold space can lead to tight muscles and increase the risk of injuries.
Focus on Flexibility
Stretching is always important, but in winter, it can feel tougher to stay flexible. The trick is to warm your body first—never stretch cold muscles. After your warm-up, try these stretches:
Hamstring Stretch: Sit on the floor with one leg straight and the other bent. Reach for your toes on the straight leg, keeping your back flat. Switch sides.
Butterfly Stretch: Sit with the soles of your feet together and gently press your knees toward the floor.
Cat-Cow Stretch: On your hands and knees, alternate between arching and rounding your back. This is great for loosening up your spine and hips.
Hold each stretch for 20-30 seconds and remember to breathe deeply.
Stay Hydrated and Eat Well
In winter, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water because you’re not sweating as much. But staying hydrated is just as important for your muscles and energy levels. Keep a water bottle with you during class or practice.
Eating healthy, energy-boosting snacks like bananas, nuts, or granola bars can also keep you fuelled for dance, especially if you’re feeling sluggish during darker, colder days.
Keep Your Energy Up Between Classes
The cold weather can sometimes sap your motivation, but there are plenty of ways to stay inspired:
Set small goals for each class or practice session, like mastering a tricky move or improving your balance.
Listen to your favourite music to boost your mood while you practice at home.
Take time to watch inspiring dance videos—seeing others perform can spark new ideas and reignite your passion.
Cool Down Properly
Don’t skip your cool-down at the end of class or practice, especially in winter. Cooling down helps prevent soreness and keeps your muscles from tightening up as your body cools off. A few gentle stretches, combined with deep breathing, can work wonders.
Have Fun With Festive Themes!
Winter is the perfect time to add some festive flair to your dance routine. Try practicing to Christmas music or using seasonal props like scarves or ribbons to make your sessions more playful. At Sarah Louise Ashworth School of Dance, we often include fun, holiday-inspired elements into our classes to keep things exciting during the colder months.
Stay Warm and Keep Dancing!
Winter might bring chilly weather, but it doesn’t have to freeze your motivation. With the right warm-ups, stretches, and mindset, you can stay flexible, energised, and ready to dance your heart out all season long.
